In 2008 the ESF, European Social Forum, will be arranged in Malmö, Sweden. We will grab this opportunity to bring together different active peace movements from all over Europe. We will organise a European peace forum, European Peace Action, which will create a network of European peace groups for direct action. Our goal is to develop common strategies and campaigns.

The forum will run between the 17- 21 September 2008 and the programme will contain presentations, discussions, practical work and networking. The forum will focus on 4 themes: NATO and the militarisation of the EU, nuclear weapons, militarisation of space, and the international military industrial complex. The over-reaching theme for the entire forum will be how to strengthen our resistance against militarisation.

During the forum there will also be possibilities to do direct actions against arms companies in the region. The forum welcomes anybody who is interested in peace work, not only people who are already active but also those who don't have any previous experience at all in peace activism.

“Peace and disarmament” inside the European Humanist Forum “The strength of nonviolence”, Milan, Italy, 17, 18 and 19 October 2008.

The thematic area “Peace and disarmament” has been active since 2003, with the participation of people from different European countries: with the name “Peace and Nonviolence Commission” has taken part to the meeting of the European Humanist Regional in Prague in 2003, to the meeting in Budapest in 2004 and to the European Humanist Forum in Lisbon in 2006.

All these moments have been occasions to interchange, compare and share experiences and present the documents elaborated by members about topics related to peace, with the objective of provide not very well known data, together with a humanist point of view.

We have therefore broached topics such as the European Constitution (the rejected with the referendum in France and Holland in 2006), the arms production and trade, the nuclear bombs, the European foreign policy and the presence of troops of several European countries in the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the conflict between Israel and Palestine, the genocides, the trend of military expenses and so on.

The participants of the thematic area are besides active in many initiatives and campaigns, from Europe for peace (www.europeforpeace.eu), for an Europe free from nuclear weapons, to the movement against the U.S. bases in Czech Republic, from the demonstrations and peace symbols in Hungary to the organization of forum and conferences with experts and activists in Spain and Italy, to the collection of signatures for laws of popular initiative about nuclear disarmament and military bases in Italy.

During the European Humanist Forum of October 2008, in the “Peace and Disarmament working table” the representatives of various European organizations will meet to define common points, launch initiatives of mutual support and moments of mobilization.

Besides this moment of interchange, that will take place in the morning of Saturday October 18^th ad Bicocca University, we have organized three panels about important topics concerning our field and we have invited to speak experts and activists of different countries: our interest is to deepen matters like nuclear weapons, that concern us all, but also to listen to little-known experiences that show that the voice of nonviolence can rise even in the most violent places in the world and to know “David versus Goliath” stories that can be very interesting and encouraging.

Europa está en guerra

Las bombas no caen en Europa. Caen a miles de kilómetros de distancia, en Iraq y Afganistán. Sin embargo la guerra se hace desde Europa. Europa sirve de plataforma de lanzamiento de las intervenciones militares en todo el mundo. Los marcos varían: OTAN, UE, la coalición liderada por EEUU, ONU. Los blancos también varían: Iraq, Afganistán, Líbano, Chad, etc. Pero no el punto de partida: las bases militares, y los aeropuertos y puertos civiles europeos.

Europa alberga una gran maquinaria de intervención militar

La guerra de Iraq hizo esto muy visible. EEUU y Reino Unido emprendieron la guerra desde sus bases europeas. En 2003 había 54.000 militares estadounidenses destinados en bases europeas que estuvieron implicados directamente en la guerra contra Iraq. Por ejemplo, el ejército de EEUU se desplegó desde Alemania e Italia. Los vuelos de bombardeo partieron desde bases británicas y portaaviones en el Mediterráneo. Los marines fueron introducidos en el norte de Iraq desde Creta y Bulgaria. Y esto sigue en marcha. En 2006, dos tercios de los militares estadounidenses en Europa fueron desplegados en Iraq y Afganistán, estaban preparados para salir, o acababan de volver de allí. Desde enero de 2003, más de 1 millón de soldados de EEUU han pasado por el aeropuerto de Shannon en Irlanda de camino a Iraq y Afganistán. Por toda Europa, los aeropuertos han sido usados por los vuelos de secuestro de la CIA. Sin Europa la guerra de Iraq no hubiera sido posible.
Los propios países europeos están participando en los actuales conflictos en Iraq y Afganistán. Más de 25.000 soldados europeos luchan bajo el mando de la OTAN en Afganistán. Fuerzas de la UE están interviniendo en África. Tanto la OTAN como la UE están desarrollando fuerzas de intervención rápida. Varios países europeos tienen bases militares fuera de Europa en apoyo de sus intervenciones.
Hacemos la guerra con las etiquetas de “intervención militar humanitaria” y “guerra contra el terrorismo”. Tras estas etiquetas de relaciones públicas, la maquinaria de intervención militar protege los intereses económicos y sostiene la orden mundial existente.

Convocamos un Día Europeo de Acción Directa Noviolenta contra la guerra el 14-15 de noviembre de 2008. Este día de acción no está organizado por ningún grupo: la idea es que los-las antimilitaristas de toda Europa adapten el día de acción a su contexto local. Esta convocatoria nace de las debates entre activistas antimilitaristas de toda Europa en la acción “NATO: Game Over” de marzo de 2008.
Es importante que nos animemos y apoyemos mutuamente. Puede ser también útil para el trabajo de medios decir el alcance de este día de acción en Europa. L’Europe est en guerre.

Les bombes ne frappent pas l’Europe. Elles tombent à plusieurs milliers de kilomètres en Irak et en Afghanistan. Pour autant la guerre se fomente en Europe. L’Europe est une piste d’envol pour des interventions militaires de par le monde. Le cadre varie : OTAN, Union Européenne, coalition américaine du moment, Nations Unies. Les cibles aussi changent : Irak, Liban, Tchad, etc. Mais le départ des interventions reste : des bases militaires ainsi que des ports et aéroports civils en Europe.

L’Europe accueille une énorme machinerie militaire d’intervention .

La guerre en Irak rend celle-ci très visible. Les USA et le Royaume Uni ont guerroyé à partir de leurs bases européennes. En 2003, 54 000 militaires américains stationnés en Europe étaient directement impliqués dans la guerre en Irak. Pour exemple, le déploiement de l’armée américaine à partir de l’Allemagne et de l’Italie ; les bombardiers décollaient de bases en Grande Bretagne et de porte-avions en Méditerranée ; les marines étaient infiltrés dans le nord irakien à partir de la Crète et de la Bulgarie. Et cela continue : en 2006, les deux tiers des militaires américains basés en Europe se préparaient à partir pour l’Irak ou l’Afghanistan ou en revenait tout juste. Depuis janvier 2003, plus d’un million de soldats américains ont transité par l’aéroport irlandais de Shannon pour l’Afghanistan et l’Irak. Des aéroports à travers l’Europe ont été utilisés pour des vols de « restitution ». Sans l’Europe, la guerre en Irak était impossible.

Des pays européens en tant que tel ont participé aux conflits se perpétuant en Afghanistan et en Irak. Plus de 25 000 soldats européens combattent sous mandats de l’OTAN en Afghanistan. Les forces de l’Union Européenne interviennent en Afrique. L’OTAN comme l’Union Européenne développent des forces d’interventions rapides. Plusieurs pays européens ont des bases militaires en dehors de l’Europe pour soutenir leurs interventions.

Nous faisons la guerre à coup de « intervention militaire humanitaire » et de « guerre contre le terrorisme ». Derrière ces étiquettes de façade, la machinerie des interventions militaires protège les intérêts économiques et maintient l’ordre mondial existant.

Le point de départ de la guerre est l’Europe. Arrêtons la guerre à partir de l’Europe.

Nous appelons à une journée européenne d’action directe nonviolente contre la guerre les 14 et 15 novembre 2008. Cette journée d’action n’est l’apanage d’aucune organisation. L’idée est que les antimilitaristEs à travers l’Europe adaptent la journée d’action au contexte local. Cet appel fait suite à des discussions entre les militantEs antimilitaristEs de toutes l’Europe lors de l’action « NATO: Game Over !» (OTAN : la partie est terminée !) en mars 2008.

Il est important de nous encourager et de nous soutenir mutuellement. Il peut être aussi utile lors de notre travail avec les media de montrer l’étendue de cette journée à travers l’Europe. War starts from Europe.

14-15 November 2008: European day of action against military infrastructure.

Europe is at war.

The bombs are not falling in Europe. They are falling several thousands of km away in Iraq and Afghanistan. But still war is waged from Europe. Europe serves as a launch pad for military interventions worldwide. The frameworks differ: NATO, EU, US coalition of the willing, UN. The targets also vary: Iraq,Afghanistan, Lebanon, Chad, etc. But the departure points don't:military bases and civilian airports and harbours in Europe.

Europe hosts a large military intervention machinery.

The Iraq war made this very visible. The US and the UK waged war from their European bases. In 2003, there were 54,000 Europe-based US military personnel who were directly involved in the war against Iraq. For example, the US Army was deployed out of Germany and Italy., Bombing flights departed from UK bases and aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean. Marines were inserted into northern Iraq from Crete and Bulgaria. And this is still going on. In 2006 two-thirds of the Europe based US military were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, preparing to depart or had just returned. Since January2003, over 1 million US troops have passed through Shannon Airport in Ireland en route to Afghanistan and Iraq. Airports across Europe have been used for 'rendition' flights. Without Europe the Iraq war was impossible.

European countries themselves are participating in the ongoing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. More than 25,000 European soldiers fight under NATO command in Afghanistan. EU forces are intervening in Africa. Both NATO and the EU are developing rapid intervention forces. Several European countries have military bases outside Europe to support their interventions.

We make war under the labels of 'military humanitarian intervention' and 'war against terrorism'. Behind these PR labels, the military intervention machineries protect economic interests and sustain the existing global order.

War Starts from Europe. Let's Stop War from Europe.

We call for a European day of nonviolent direct action against war on 14-15 November 2008. This day of action is not being organised by any one organisation ― the idea is that anti-militarists across Europe can adapt the action day to their local context. This call originated in discussions amongst anti-militarist activists from across Europe at the 'NATO: Game Over' action in March 2008.

It is important that we encourage and support each other. It can also be useful when doing media work to be able to say how widespread the day of action is across Europe. After the action day please post reports/pictures/videos.

Take action at your local military bases and installations usedfor military interventions! Let's resist military globalisation together!
